Best Spots For Fall Chattanooga Tourists (That aren’t Ruby Falls!)

Fall is here! Chattanooga is never more alive than in autumn. Some people prefer the holidays, but I’ve always thought that fall is the happiest time of the year. Cozy sweaters and hot apple cider. Forests that are electrified with color. Firepits crackling. It’s just the best. And it’s hands down, one of the best times (and places!) to get married.

Tourists flock to the mountains in search of fall colors and Oktoberfest brews. Your out-of-town guests are traveling for a specific purpose… your wedding. But ultimately, they’re still tourists.

I always recommend adding a guide to local events and activities on your wedding website. It’s a great way to ensure that your guests will have an amazing weekend. They may even decide to stay a little longer and make a vacation out of the trip! With all Chattanooga has to offer… why not?

Search results for things to do in Chattanooga can be a bit tiresome. Sure, Rock City and Ruby Falls are great. But they’re expensive. And, let’s be honest… they’re a little cheesy. Our beautiful city has so much to offer- there’s no reason for your guests to be stuck with experiencing the default. Here’s a comprehensive list of the best things to do in Chattanooga in the fall.

Take a River Cruise

The Tennessee River Gorge is often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the South”. The Tennessee River has cut a majestic, snaking path through Appalachia that's both dramatic and beautiful. It’s difficult to experience the full effect of the canyon unless you’re on the water. But… fall isn’t exactly a time to get wet. There are a few local companies that will tour you through the river gorge so that you can experience fall colors in their full splendor (while still having the option of climate control).

Have a Scenic Picnic

Chattanooga has many overlooks that are perfect for a picnic (with under 5 minutes of hiking). Pick up a to-go order from a local favorite spot like Kenny’s Sandwiches or Milk and Honey. Or pack your own lunch. Lay a blanket out in one of these scenic overlooks:

Chill by the Firepits at State of Confusion

Travelling can be exhausting. Sometimes you just need a beautiful patio, a nice cocktail, and a fire to help you relax. State of Confusion is a local restaurant in the hip Southside district. They have creative cocktails, delicious ceviche, and bountiful firepits you can spend the evening next to. The restaurant is almost all patio space. Their ambiance is artistic, yet relaxed. Copper sculptures, expansive fire pits, and games scatter the lot.

Shop the Sunday Market

Almost every city has a weekend farmer’s market. But Chattanooga’s market is… bustling. The vendors vary from local flowers, produce, gourmet cheeses, vegan alternatives, art, clothing, and drinks. Food trucks circle up, and free samples are plentiful. There’s always live music and lots of puppies to pet.

If you’re in town the weekend of October 9th-10th, strap on some lederhosen and check out the annual Oktoberfest.

When you’ve shopped to your fill, walk across the street to Chattanooga Brewing Company and sample their famous habanero beer.

Take a Scenic Drive

Who says you have to go outside to experience the great outdoors? One of the most beautiful places in Chattanooga is the scenic River Canyon Road. The road follows the Tennessee River along the base of Signal Mountain and Prentice Cooper State Forest. The colors of fall foliage are amplified by the reflection of the water. Pop out of the car to get some fresh air at one of several mini-beaches, or to explore Suck Creek.

On your way back, stop to get some food and drink at the local River Drifters pub.

Catch a Show

There are a few places in town where you can always find live entertainment on the weekends. These places are great to keep in your back pocket for a wedding “after party”

Go for a Hike

Where do I even start! There are so many amazing local trails. Typing “Chattanooga” into All Trails will lead you to so many results. Feel free to text me and ask if the trail you’ve found is a solid choice. But in the meantime, here are my picks for shorter, scenic hikes. These will appease your nature fix without taking up your entire day. Ya know… for the times when you want to go for a hike, and also have plenty of time to clean up and get ready for the wedding you’re attending later that day.

If you’re not outdoorsy, and you’re a bit intimidated to traipse into the wilderness, consider reaching out to Experience Chattanooga. They lead wonderful guided hikes. They even offer professional photography as part of their packages so you can have some Instagram-worthy photos from your trip.

Have a Northshore Day

You could spend a whole day just exploring the North Shore. Park on the south end of the Walnut Street Bridge. Grab a latte from Rembrandts then take a leisurely walk across the walking bridge.

  • Pop in and out of the fun boutiques and galleries on Frazier Avenue.

  • Lay a blanket in Coolidge park and play frisbee.

  • Rent e-bikes and pop onto the Riverwalk.

  • Grab a cocktail at Whiskey Theif or some sushi at Totto at the end of the day.

Did ya just skip to the bottom?
